1 Samuel 9
Saul Chosen to Be King
Kish was a man (awareness) of Benjamin (descendant of omnipotence)
- son of Abiel: father (i.e., "possessor") of God = "pious."
- son of Zeror: root; that straitens or binds; that keeps tight
- son of Becorath: the first birth
- son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a man of wealth: Speaking
There was not a man of Israel more handsome, nor taller from shoulders upward than Saul, his son.
Immediately we see that the forefathers of Saul (asked for) possess high esteem in their own right.
The donkeys (peace) of Kish were lost so Kish told Saul to take one young (choose) man with you and arise and look for the donkeys. He passed through the hill country of Ephraim (fruitful-increase) and passed through the land of Shalishah (3), the land (church) of Shaalim (fox - cunning). Then they passed through the land of Benjamin (son of my right hand), but did not find them.
The beginning of this establishes an origin of character that descends into a result. Within this self-righteous state, we experience a lack of peace, and seek desperately to find it. We attempt to attain it by increase in possessions from high places. We attempt to gain, outwit our set of core principals, or even by adoption of power.
They came to the Land of Zuph (observation), Saul said to his servant (choice) that they should give up peace else the father would become anxious; But the servant said, "Behold, there is a man (awareness) of God in this city (consciousness), and he is a man held in honor, all that he says comes true.
So now let us go there. Perhaps he could tell us the way. then Saul said to the servant, "But if we go what can we bring this man for the bread in our sacks is gone. and there is no present to bring to the man of God to tell us our way. What do we have"? The servant replied that he has a quarter of a shekel of silver (redemption) and that he would give it to the man of God to tell us the way. Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, "let us go to a seer, but today's prophet, was formerly a seer. And Saul said; come let us go. So they went to the city where the man of God was.
So we have reached an intersection where we either let go of pursuing peace by the wrong means, or become anxious, yet there is that servant inside of us that reminds us of what we know is significant and that we must trust ourselves... Then we start questioning if what we have is enough, followed quickly by redeeming our qualities and visualizing the outcome from our thoughts.
As they went up the hill to the city, they met young women (sources of revelation)coming out to draw water and asked them, "Is the seer here?" They answered, "He is, behold, he has come just now to the city, because the people have a sacrifice today on a high place. As soon as you enter the city you will find him, before he goes up to the high place to eat. For people will not eat until he comes, since he must bless the sacrifice; afterward those who are invited will eat. Go up immediately." As they were entering the city, they saw Samuel coming out toward them on his way up to the high place.
I think at this moment we experience a revelation where our soul is guided to the spirit.
The day before, the Lord had already revealed to Samuel (heard of God) that today at this moment He would send a man (awareness) from the land (church) of Benjamin (descendant of omnipotence) and you shall anoint him prince over my people Israel (God prevails). He shall save my people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have seen my people, because their cry has come to me. When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him that he was the man He spoke of and that he would restrain the people.
Let's stop here for a moment. God loves us and gives us the power of choice. We can do our will and God will use this decision as an opportunity to reveal his omnipotence. What happens is somewhat of a dialog within us and whether or not we know it, we will mark this moment, for there will come a time, when God speaks to us that we will see that even at this moment, He was always with us.
Saul approached Samuel in the gate (correlation) and said, "Tell me where is the house of the seer?" Samuel answered, "I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for today you shall eat with me, and in the morning, I will let you go and will tell you all that is on your mind. As for the donkeys lost 3 days ago, do not set your mind on them, for they have been found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for you and your father's house?" Saul answered, "I am not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way.
Our immortal soul is composed of our mind, emotions, and decision making. Our Holy Spirit is the God within us. It educates, strengthens, enlightens, and encourages us. You will notice that Saul approaches Samuel asking for enlightenment, but it is Samuel (growing Holy Spirit within,) that tells exactly how things will go. God can use all choices for His glory. 3 represents completeness. And beginning in the morning, this new journey will begin. Our ignorance to know our purpose will raise questions that only God can answer.
Then Samuel took Saul and his young man into the hall (court) and placed them at the head of those invited, who were about 30 persons. Samuel said to the cook, "Bring the portion... which I said 'Put it aside'". So the cook took up the leg and what was on it and set them before Saul. Samuel said, "See, what was kept is set before you. Eat, because it was kept for you until the hour appointed that you might eat with guests".
At this point, Saul has been given what was reserved for him and placed at the head. I would see this as a final confirmation (decision) to the original request.
So Saul ate with Samuel that day, then taken from high place in city to bed on the roof, where Saul slept. At the break of dawn, Samuel called Saul on the roof, "Up that I may send you on your way". He arose and went into the street with Samuel.
As they were going to the outskirts of the city, Samuel said, "Tell the servant to pass on before us, and when he is passed on, stop here yourself for awhile, that I may make known to you the word of God".
At this point, the state of mind (high from being the head at dinner and sleeping on the roof) is but the beginning that will soon be official when choice is now put ahead of us and we are left with God's inevitable truth.
How this speaks to me...
Reaching a moment in time where we are selected to server a purpose, is planned well ahead. Within my life, all my experiences, choices, relationships, and outcomes have coalesced to build my character at that very moment in time. There are portions of who I am; guarded that might result in self-righteous acts. Once in that state of mind I seek peace. Not in the areas where peace can be found, but lets say by the acquisition of material possessions.
This can continue for long periods and cause distress within myself and emit wreckage affecting those I love around me. Deep down inside, I desire those God given loving emotions (joy, serenity) as a result of right living. By placing my own desire before others, I establish the basis of self-motivation. Only by realizing it has happened and surrendering it, can I once again reestablish peace with God.
It is maddening to be in a place that evolves into a result that serves nothing more than to gain a painful perspective.
